The Basics

As a focal point in the Belfast landscape, most city sightseeing tours include a stop at City Hall, including round-trip day tours from Dublin. As you stroll the grounds of the Portland stone structure, you’ll see the copper dome, Queen Victoria statue, and controversial Union flag flying from the pediment. You can also book a politics-focused tour to gain deeper insight into the city’s complex past.

Giant's Causeway & Belfast City Day Tour from Dublin
Stunning view and we were glad we took this tour. However, it was during corona time and we were shocked that the tour guide didn’t check the vaccinations certificate. That was not okay.

Walking Through The Terror Side of Belfast

A History of Terror - Belfast City Centre Walking Tour
We decided to take this tour, because we did not understand all that was going on during the Troubles. Our tour guide was excellent. He answered all our questions with ease, and a slow tone. We walked all over and enjoyed learning new information. It was a tough time.

Giant's Causeway & Belfast City Day Tour from Dublin
I had such an amazing time! I absolutely loved our tour guide that touched on Irish folklore as well as different pieces of Irish History ! Seeing the Giant’s Causeways was just an incredible experience along with the dark hedges! I don’t know if I could pick a favorite moment even if I tried. Everything was just so wonderful !

An excellent introduction to the ‘Irish Problem’

A History of Terror - Belfast City Centre Walking Tour
A very knowledgable guide who had lived through the troubles. He provided an excellent introduction to the “Irish Problem” starting with Henry VIII to provide the background to more recent events. A very fair account of a number of incidents to provide a human account of the tragedy resulting from sectarianism, miscalculation and lack of trust between the protagonists. It was not an account of winners and losers for in ‘The Troubles’ every part of the community suffered losses.

Giant's Causeway & Belfast City Day Tour from Dublin
We would have been better not to do the Dark Hedges and have time in Belfast. The weather didn’t cooperate which was a bummer and not the fault of the tour. Lots of Bus riding but we did get to see Northern Ireland!

This tour was absolutely brilliant! Paul (our guide) was very knowledgeable of the history and politics of the troubles. Paul explained everything so well and added a bit of humour along the way. Highly recommend this walking tour in Belfast.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • City Hall is a must for anyone interested in Belfast’s social history.

  • Remember to bring a coat and umbrella during rainy months, as the memorial gardens and lawns are uncovered.

  • The building is accessible for wheelchairs, with adapted toilets, a ramped entrance and exit, and a lift.

How to Get There

City Hall features on many guided walking tours of Belfast, which can be useful for orienting yourself in the city. Otherwise, Lanyon Place and Great Victoria Street stations are both a short walk from City Hall, and the 6A bus serves Donegall Square directly. Belfast is a typical capital city—lots of traffic—so it’s best to avoid driving because parking can be a challenge.

When to Get There

Belfast City Hall is open year round, though the building, grounds, gift shop, and exhibition all keep slightly different hours. In summer, you can picnic on the outdoor lawns or simply relax on the freshly kept grass.

History in Stained Glass

The building’s stained glass windows reveal the history of Belfast and pay homage to important community members. The Belfast Dockers Strike window, located on the northeast corridor of the ground floor, is a particularly powerful installation that demonstrates the power of a united Belfast.
