The Basics

On Bernauer Strasse, the Berlin Wall Memorial is made up of an original section of the wall and a gun turret. Visit the memorial and various portions of the wall on a small-group tour to learn about the area's history among other travelers, or on a private historian-led tour for an in-depth, personalized experience. Bike tours, Segway tours, and walking tours are all great ways to see the wall's various remaining sections spread across the city, as well as Checkpoint Charlie, the infamous border-crossing spot between the two sides.

Explore The Berlin Wall: Cold War Berlin and Behind the Berlin Wall
I'm a Global History teacher and learned SO much from this tour. Paul was an AMAZING guide! He was organized, interesting and knowledgeable - not to mention friendly and great company. He was very accomodating to my specific interests regarding the Cold War and the Berlin Wall. I would say this tour is a must-do if you are interested in history and gaining an understanding of Berlin's role in it. Oh, and there's a tasty donut & coffee break!

Berlin Bike Tour
Nate expertly guided us on an easy 5-Hour amble around the amazing city of Berlin. We learned a LOT and had a blast in the process. Bikes were super comfy and the stop at the Biergarten was perfect. A tour not to be missed!

Private Walking Tour: World War 2 and Cold War Sites in Berlin
Our morning tour with Eran was the most worthwhile part of our trip to Berlin! Not only was it informative, it also offered context and insights we would never had gleaned otherwise. Eran listened to our interests, shaped the tour accordingly, and could not have been warmer or more professional. Absolutely worth the money and time — we would ask him to join us every day of our trip if we could!

Wonderful tour with Beth

PRIVATE BEHIND THE BERLIN WALL and COLD WAR BERLIN TOUR
Beth was a wonderful guide for this walking tour in English. The tour was primarily supposed to be a cold war tour, but since I was also interested in German and Nazi history, Beth gave me a nice introduction to the history of Germany, rise of the Nazi party, WWII and then the division of Germany and Berlin after the war. Beth is a student of history and very knowledgeable and she was happy to tailor the tour according to my specific needs and answer all my questions. We started at Reichstag, visited the Roma and Cinti memorial, Soviet memorial of WW II and made several other stops related to WWII and the Cold War including a stop at Check point Charlie. At the end of the tour, she recommended me to visit Tranenpalast and some other free museums. This was an expensive tour since I was required to pay the price for two even though I was the only one person in the tour. But I am glad that I still took it. A tour like this needs a guide who is knowledgeable and has good command over the language. Beth was fully equipped. I recommend this tour and Beth as a guide. Just be prepared to walk though since you will need to walk for 3- 4 hours to see all these wonderful historical sites!

Jess was a fantastic guide! He was extremely knowledgeable and a great story teller. Happy to indulge questions and discussion! He spoke TO us not AT us. He was patient and clearly loves his topic as much as he does sharing his knowledge.

2 hour 15 min Berlin Wall Self Drive Trabant Tour
We squeezed our young teens in the back and set out on our Trabi adventure. Saw all the sights in a whistle stop tour in our line of Trabi’s. German and English spoken. Great option for a rain-soaked day.

Martin, our guide, was excellent. Lots of knowledge, imparted with humour. Long tour so good value for money but the time flew!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Berlin Wall Memorial features a visitor center, where you can get an overview of Berlin wall sites and watch a historical film, plus the Documentation Center with its exhibits and the Chapel of Reconciliation, where prayers services are held.

  • The longest and most interesting remaining stretch of the wall is the open-air East Side Gallery, set on Mühlenstrasse featuring murals painted by international artists in 1990 and again in 2009.

  • Because Berlin's reunification was so successful, it can be difficult to tell the difference between east and west in many parts of the city. Look for the double row of cobblestones to guide you along certain sections of the wall’s course.

How to Get to the Berlin Wall

The almost 100-mile-long (160-km) Berliner Mauerweg is a multi-use path that runs along the former wall, with 40 multilingual information stations posted along the way. In other parts of the city, lengths of the wall are covered in psychedelic graffiti, like that at the East Side Gallery on Mühlenstrasse. Sections of the wall also remain near the former site of the Gestapo headquarters.

Berlin Sights Along the Wall

It's ironic that Berlin's most popular attraction, for the most part, no longer exists. Because the Berlin Wall disappears and reappears around the city, you can see several of the German capital's most important landmarks as you visit the wall. Museum Island, Potsdamer Platz, and the Brandenburg Gate can be seen easily on a bicycle tour, weather permitting.
