Beatrix Potter Gallery and Hawkshead
The Beatrix Potter Gallery is a popular destination for families and all fans of the famous author’s children's books. This 17th-century building in the town of Hawkshead, in the Lake District, was once the office of Potter's husband, the solicitor William Heelis, and now houses much of her original artwork.

The Basics
Entering the Beatrix Potter Gallery is like stepping back in time; the building’s interior has remained largely unchanged since the turn of the 20th century. The gallery displays the original illustrations of beloved children’s characters like Jemima Puddle-Duck, Mrs.Tiggy-Winkle, and Peter Rabbit. To learn more about Beatrix Potter and her legacy, join one of several tours that stop at the gallery as well as at other sites, like Hill Top, Potter’s home.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • You must buy an entry ticket to visit the Beatrix Potter Gallery, but National Trust members can enter for free.
  • There are stairs at the gallery entrance that may be difficult to navigate for those in wheelchairs.
  • The gallery has several activities designed for children, including interactive displays and a quiz.
How to Get There
The gallery is on Hawkshead’s Main Street, and there is paid parking nearby. The closest railway station is in Windermere, a village about 20 minutes away by car. There are public buses that connect the two towns. You can also visit on a guided Lake District tour that includes transportation.

When to Get There
The gallery is open every day in the spring and summer months. It is closed in winter, so check the schedule if you’re visiting in a shoulder season. The best time to visit the Lake District is from June through August, when the weather is at its warmest. Spring and autumn can be pleasant as well, though the weather can shift quickly.

Explore Lake District National Park
Lake District National Park, in Cumbria, is considered one of Britain’s greatest national treasures and offers a wealth of opportunities for outdoor sports. The region is home to mountains, valleys, villages, towns, coastline and, of course, the famous lakes. Visit to enjoy hikes, meander around the serene lakes, and visit quaint tea shops and a variety of small museums.
