Hardknott Roman Fort (Mediobogdum)
Built in the second century, Hardknott Roman Fort sits at the summit of a steep mountain pass. Remnants of old walls, a parade ground, and a commander’s villa still stand, though they are somewhat upstaged by panoramic views of Eskdale Valley and the surrounding mountains.

The Basics
Tours that stop at Hardknott Roman Fort typically include scenic drives along the Wrynose and Hardknott passes, and rides on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway. Some history-focused tours combine a trip to Hardknott Roman Fort with a visit to Hadrian’s Wall, the defensive Roman fortifications that marked the boundary between the Roman-controlled south and unconquered Scotland.

Many multi-day tours of the Lake District, which tend to depart from Windermere, Manchester, or Liverpool, also make stops at Hardknott Roman Fort. Information boards at the fort site provide details about its layout and history.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • The road leading to the fort is steep, twisting, and single-track; its best navigated by confident drivers.
  • Due to steep and uneven surfaces, the fort is not easily accessible for travelers with limited mobility.
  • Wear waterproof boots with good tread or Wellington boots, as access routes to the site can be muddy, particularly after rainfall.

How to Get There
Hardknott Fort is situated in Eskdale in Cumbria’s Lake District. If you’re coming from the east, follow the A593 then turn right and follow the signs for Little Langdale. From the west, turn off the A595 to Eskdale, then follow the road past Beckfoot and Boot. The mountain pass that leads to Hardknott Roman Fort is difficult to travest; if you’d rather avoid driving, go as part of a tour instead.

When to Get There
Hardknott Roman Fort is accessible seven days a week, 24 hours a day, The fort attracts most visitors in summer, though even then, it’s never crowded. Pick a clear day for the best views of the valley and the Lakeland fells.

Roman Sights in the Lake District
If you’re a history buff, don’t miss the other Roman-era sights in the region. Around a 30-minute drive west of Hardknott Roman Fort sits Ravenglass Roman Bath House, which used to be connected to Hardknott Roman Fort by a Roman road. Near the shores of Lake Windermere, you’ll find the second-century Ambleside Roman Fort, where archaeological digs have uncovered the remains of gates, a commander’s house, and granaries.
